What is Addiction?

1. It is a disease.

A disease is identifiable regardless of age, race or social standing, and can be
identified by the symptom of compulsivity. Compulsivity of addictive behaviors can
be evident in a number of behaviors such as: alcohol, drugs, eating or lack thereof,
sex and/or gambling. This compulsive disease of addiction is usually inappropriate,
unpredictable, excessive, and constant.

2. The addictive behavior /or disease is primary.

Although there are other contributing factors that may be focused on, it is the
disease that exacerbates and is these additional observable problems. Until the
addictive behavior is addressed, the other stressors or life challenges will not be
able to be addressed adequately.

3. The disease follows a predictable & progressive course.

Any addictive behavior if not arrested will result in emotional, relational, spiritual
and/or physical death. It is progressive in nature, and will always get worse.

4. The disease is fatal.

If left alone, the addictive behavior regardless of what that behavior is…will be 100% fatal.

5. The disease is treatable.

It can be treated and arrested and is a lifelong journey of commitment to emotional,
relational, physical and spiritual transformation.
